BOOK - Carina
Carina is the story of the Schrader family as they travel from Alaska to Florida to buy a 40-foot sailboat with the intent to sail around the world. I was 14 years old when we left Alaska and embarked on this trip of a lifetime.
We encountered relentless rain, violent storms, searing sun, boredom, sleepless nights spent putting up and taking down sails, sailing mishaps and triumphs and numerous creatures of the sea such as whales and sharks. We sailed from Florida, through the Bahamas, Caribbean, Panama Canal and up the west coast of Central America, Mexico and the United States to end our trip in the little town of Whittier, AK.
This is the story of my life while I spent three years as a crew member on Carina. 224 pages, softcover
This book is also available in Kindle format at Amazon.com - just search for Carina by Patricia Kilson.

BOOK - Song of the Raven
Song of the Raven is a book I wrote and illustrated for small children up to about age 10. It is a story about the circle of life in the Alaskan wilderness. I wrote the book to help children understand death and its place in life. The book shows death by accident, by a predator, and from old age and how each death is part of the circle of life. The illustrations are pen & ink. To add interest for those who are re-reading the story there are two small animals (a squirrel and a mouse) hidden within the pages. The borders around each picture also change as each animal dies and is replaced by another. Sample pages below.
Teachers: This story is good for explaining death so that small children can understand. It also has examples of repitition, is written in rhyme, and shows various Alaskan animals in their natural habitat. If you live within the Municipality of Anchorage, I am willing to come to your school or library and read the story for younger children.

BOOK - Sourdough Scott's Bedtime Fairy Tales
This children's book, Sourdough Scott's Bedtime Fairy Tales, was written by Daniel Janik, who now lives in Hawaii, and illustrated by me. The book is comprised of three stories set in Alaska; Three Bears, Wolf and Moon, and Otter Girl. The first, Three Bears, gives a possible explanation for why Alaska is home to three kinds of bears; Polar, Brown and Black. The second story, Wolf and Moon, is a cautionary tale about being content in your life and the results of being selfish. The third story, Otter Girl, is a story about love and loyalty.
These are not traditional Alaskan native folklore, but are original stories created by Dan Janik. The illustrations are in pencil. Cover art is my original drawing with digitally enhanced color.
